Intention and Behavior

I just can't seem to lose weight and keep it off.
I quit smoking but after a while, I start again!
I have no will power; I can't stick to my diet.
I don't mean to be so negative with my kids; it just comes out that way.
I go to meetings and call my sponsor but I still can't stop drinking for very long.
I know it's irrational.  He's a jerk but I just can't stop thinking about him.
I I don't know why I can't keep a girlfriend or wife, they just leave me.

These are the most common comments I encounter with my clients.

It's always the same story.  They've bought every book and CD, taken every class, workshop and seminar they can find and yet, they just can't seem to break through the glass ceiling in their lives.

Why can't we make a decision and follow our plan?  Are we really so weak willed?  Are we destined to make the same mistakes over and over again?

Of course not!  We have the ability to change our lives.  We already have a most powerful tool available to us - our minds!  Change your mind and you will change your life.

The trick is to separate intention from behavior.

Of course you don't want your wife to leave you.  But how do you prevent what you believe is the inevitable?  Can you really change your belief?  Won't you always have some small doubt?

Yes, if all you do is communicate with your conscious mind.  Your conscious mind only controls choices you never conceived of before or already believe you have.

Your subconscious mind is prompting you to behave the way you do.  It thinks it is protecting you.  It thinks it is doing what you want it to do.  It thinks this is the way it is suppose to be.  The prime directives of the subconscious is to preserve the body Emotional stress is perceived by the subconscious mind as just as threatening to the body as a fall from a 10 story building.  The subconscious mind is a great little soldier.  If follows orders.  If you believe that marriage is hard and likely to fail, your subconscious mind will create the conditions that will make your marriage hard on you and allow you to fail.  If you believe that marriage is full of strife, your subconscious mind will perceive strife and even create it in your mind; a self-fulfilling prophecy.

That's how your subconscious mind controls your conscious behavior.

It's the same whether you are trying to control your weight, quit smoking, quit drinking or using drugs, perform better at work, play better golf, get better grades or train for a marathon.  Your subconscious mind is doing what it thinks it is suppose to be doing.

So how do you change your mind?  You could spend thousands of dollars on books, CDs, DVDs, self-improvement programs, seminars and other home study programs.  You could spend even more money and years of your life on psychoanalysis.  And if you are suffering from a psychological disorder, by all means, make use of a mental health professionals services.  It could save your life.  But if you have not been diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder and require medication or specialized treatment, it's time to rethink your strategy.

So far, what have you done?  You've read books, listened to tapes/CDs, watched DVDs, spent hours in a classroom/conference room listening to lectures and taking notes.  You've diligently gone to your counselor, AA/NA meeting and basically talked yourself blue in the face.  All the while you've been communicating with your conscious mind.  That's great.  Education is a wonderful thing.  Information is power.

So how's that working for you?

Are you able to find and keep an intimate relationship without compromising your standards and pretending to be someone you are not just to please the other person?  Have you been able to effortlessly quit smoking or control your weight?  Do you relate to other people; your friends, relatives, co-workers, customers any better than when you started on this long road to self-improvement?  If you are an addict, has all this self-discovery helped you manage your addiction any better than simple will power?

No?  The sad fact is that the road to ruin is paved with good intentions.  It is behavior we want to change so that we can make more friends and more money, have happier families and live an honorable life.

The services of a skilled hypnotherapist can help you attain those results and ease your suffering.  Hypnotherapy is a combination of advanced psychological techniques that communicate with your subconscious mind; the one that overcomes your conscious intentions and directs your behavior, for results that will astound you.

If the definition of insanity is to continue to do the same things expecting different results, then isn't it time to stop the insanity?

For the control and results you have been looking for all this time; when nothing else works...
